On September 20, 2019, streets in the U.S. and around the world will fill with students and activists as part of a Global Climate Strike. The mass demonstration will take place in 150 countries and in more than 800 U.S. locations. The demonstrations are the kickoff to a week of actions that demand greater efforts to mitigate the effects of climate change and an end to the world’s reliance on fossil fuels. The challenges can’t be understated. Since 2015, the United States has left the Paris accord and reports from around the world show that countries are not moving fast enough to hit those targets. The situation may seem bleak, but there’s still hope. More than ever before, individual actions—including mobilizing for political transformation—can make a difference.
