You can order either a nylon, cotton or polyester flags at a very reasonable price, Legion officials say. Last year, the post observed its 100th birthday and purchased plaques for Teacher of the Year, Police Officer of the Year, and Fire Fighter of the year along with our Legionnaire of the year. The American Legion is reminding residents to be sure to have a usable flag for Memorial Day. When a flag is ordered through the American Legion, the Legion can help take down your old flag, to properly retire it, and help hoist your new flag. In the 16 years since the Grocer Gold Awards first launched, never has grocery been more competitive, more unpredictable or more exciting to be a part of. It’s an industry in a constant state of flux, full of innovators, disruptors and forward thinkers, ensuring nobody can afford to grow complacent. And against that backdrop, success doesn’t come easily. It takes something rather special, in fact. Which is what makes this year’s 28 winners all the more impressive. It’s not easy running the third-largest Asda in the UK, especially when it’s in Scotland, where the market is increasingly tough. But since taking over at the Livingston store two years ago, Steven Moyes has approached the task with a contagious enthusiasm. Moyes believes just “chasing the numbers” is a bad idea, and focuses on standards and behaviour as much as results. A “leader not a boss” he empowers staff with a culture that encourages people to make mistakes, and “tirelessly communicates” – a quality that’s been particularly imp...

The environmental cost of abandoning your tent at a music festival

After years of depressing images of huge fields strewn with abandoned tents and rubbish in the aftermath of music festivals, it was heartening to hear Glastonbury Festival organisers claim that 99% of festival-goers’ tents were picked up after the festival. For a festival of 200,000 people this is a huge achievement. But really it should be normal. Hopefully this bodes well for future years, because the Association of Independent Festivals estimates that a quarter of a million so called “single-use” tents are abandoned at music festivals across the UK each year. There is a popular belief that most tents left behind after festivals are collected and sold by charities or sent to good causes. But this is wishful thinking: most of it end up in landfill. The practical and cost overheads for festival organisers and charities of collecting thousands of tents are just too much. All the elements of the tents – pegs, poles, sheets and bags – need to be present, undamaged, and the tent sufficiently clean and functional to be reused. After a festival, security typically flatten those tents still standing to insure no one has been left behind, or even – as this year – to discover whether an...

Troubleshooting the Standing Pilot Safety System ACHRNews logo ACHRNews logo

When we are called to a job, it will probably be because the equipment is not working properly. What I want to do in this article is go over each component of the system, explain what can go wrong with it, and how to fix it. We will talk about 24-V standing pilot systems. For now we will just be concerned with natural-draft boilers, water heaters, and furnaces. The first thing I will talk about is the pilot safety circuit. We need three things for combustion, air + fuel + heat. The air is supplied from the venting section, and the fuel from the gas piping section. The heat comes in the form of a pilot light, intermittent ignition device, direct spark ignition, or hot surface igniter. As I said before, in this article we will discuss standing pilot lights only. Let’s go back and take a look at how we used to light pilots; then we’ll talk about the progression of safety devices and the state of technology today. A small amount of gas was released to the atmosphere from the pilot burner, and when you went to light the stove, you realized the pilot was out because the stove wouldn’t light. You relit the pilot and you were set. Now let’s apply this to a boiler. The original gas boile...

Chicago officials say horse who died outside Englewood home showed no signs of mistreatment, and report of a dog eating the animal is ‘unfounded’

Chicago animal control officials said Monday that a horse found dead outside a home in Englewood showed no signs of mistreatment, and that reports about a dog eating the animal were unfounded. The horse’s owner, Leo Beltran, was stunned by previous reports of neglect. He said his horse, named Casper, was always cared for and died of natural causes. When 28-year-old Casper fell ill, Beltran decided to move the horse from a ranch in Mendota, Illinois, to a lot next to his home in order to keep a closer eye on the animal. Chicago Animal Care and Control came to Beltran’s house after the horse died and saw no signs of mistreatment or malnourishment. “The owner reported that the deceased horse had been to the veterinarian recently and provided records for that visit,” said Jenny Schlueter, assistant to the director of the department. “A remaining horse was moved to a farm this morning. “It is legal to keep a horse in the city of Chicago as long as the animals are licensed and receive proper care,” she added. The statement is at odds with one from Chicago police earlier in the day that said at least two calls came in Saturday afternoon reporting the animals did not appear to be in goo...

From cotton balls to computer coding: Dallas marks National STEM Week.

DALLAS TWP. — That not-so-old acronym for Science, Technology, Engineering and Math — STEM — has proven it doesn’t have to mean high-tech work or advanced physics. As students at the Dallas elementary schools proved, it can be anything from a paper airplane to a roundish robot. All four district schools participated in National STEM Week beginning Monday and running through Friday with a broad sample of how STEM seeps into almost anything you want to do. The high school began on Monday with information for students about STEM careers, including a presentation about flying drones or in the world(s) of virtual reality. Dallas Middle School students are getting a chance to use new Industrial Arts equipment, including a laser engraving machine. Both the Intermediate School and Wycallis Elementary — which, combined, house kindergarten through fifth grade — set up activities in their gymnasiums for students to take turns trying. At the new Intermediate School, which welcomed students for the first time this fall, smiles and surprise were abundant as student discovered how to launch cotton balls, fold efficient paper airplanes and use simplified coding to make little robots roll the wa...

Tinder to add new features, including tools to filter matches, text and photo prompts

In December, dating app Bumble announced new tools to filter match by more than just age and distance. Now, it seems Tinder is poised to do the same. Tinder parent company Match Group this week announced plans to expand its filtering capabilities, alongside other product updates such as new social engagement features and the forthcoming international launch for its interactive in-app experience called “Swipe Night.” The company was light on details about how Tinder’s new filters would work, but did say there would be both free and paid options available. In Bumble’s case, the company offered daters two filters for free but to add more options was a paid upgrade. It wouldn’t be surprising to see Tinder do something similar. “We…want to make the utility of Tinder better and more efficient,” explained outgoing Match Group CEO Mandy Ginsberg, who recently announced she’s stepping down from her position after 14 years with the company. “We’ll be introducing features to give members more control over their experience,” she continued. “Tinder U is an example of this type of feature, where we enable users to limit their matches only to other college students. It was well-received, parti...
