New Technologies That Could Be the Future of HVACR | 2019-05-27

CRYTOCOOLER: The Peltier element, often used to cool hotel minibars or CPUs in computers, can transform electric currents into heat currents. Researchers at the University of Zurich used it to cool a 9-gram piece of copper from over 100°C to significantly below room temperature without an external power supply. Cooling systems today collectively account for 17 percent of the electricity used worldwide. All together, that’s 8 percent of global greenhouse gas emissions. “What keeps me up at night is that our energy use for cooling might grow sixfold by the year 2050, primarily driven by increasing usage in Asian and African countries,” said Aaswath Raman, a professor of materials science and engineering at UCLA. “That is, emphatically, a good thing for the health, well-being, and productivity of people living in warmer climates. However, one of the most alarming things about climate change is that the warmer our planet gets, the more we’re going to need cooling systems — systems that are themselves large emitters of greenhouse gas emissions. This then has the potential to cause a feedback loop, where cooling systems alone could become one of our biggest sources of greenhouse gases...

EnginSoft shows essential advantages of sand casting as one of the fastest and most cost-effective casting

EnginSoft shows essential advantages of sand casting as one of the fastest and most cost-effective casting methods adopted in the production of metal prototypes. Sand Casting is an excellent solution for low to medium runs of parts that do not require precise shape repeatability, as well as being the only solution for very large objects which cannot be produced with other mass production casting techniques. Sand is an excellent low cost cast material because it is refractory and chemically inert. Sand casting is also ideal for the production of very complex components requiring sand cores (cold box or shell sand) for the most intricate details and having internal areas with variations in thickness. Green sand, which is new or regenerated sand mixed with natural or synthetic binders, is the most commonly used material for making aluminum expendable molds. Green sand molds get their name from the fact that they are still moist when the molten metal is poured into them. The process of aluminum sand casting using green sand and the gravity filling method can be summarized as follows: Aluminum sand casting defects to look out for are residual oxide film, inclusion, core erosion, gas ...

I recall the point I started taking electronics seriously, although excited, a sense of dread followed

I recall the point I started taking electronics seriously, although excited, a sense of dread followed upon the thought of facing the two main obstacles faced by hobbyists and even professionals: Fabricating you own PCB’s and fiddling with the ever decreasing surface mount footprints. Any resistance to the latter proves futile, expensive, and frankly a bit silly in retrospect. Cheap SMD tools have made it extremely easy to store, place, and solder all things SMD. Once you’ve restricted all your hobbyist designs/experiments to SMD, how do you go about producing the PCBs needed for prototyping? Personally, I dread the thought of etching my own boards. The process is laborious and involves messy chemicals and specially sensitized PCB’s — none of which interest me. I’ve only ever done it a few times, and have promised myself never to do it again. Professional but cheap PCB manufacturing is more like it board pooling services such as OSH park have made this both easy and affordable — if you can wait for the turnaround. So what are the alternatives? If you are really serious about swift prototyping from your own Lab, I put forth the case of milling your own PCB’s. Read on as I take yo...

Jefferson schools exceed expectations, improve on state “report card” | News

Scattered snow showers during the morning. Then partly to mostly cloudy for the afternoon. High 37F. Winds ENE at 5 to 10 mph. Chance of snow 30%.. JEFFERSON — Time was, the only report cards parents needed to worry about were those their children brought home. Now, families have the opportunity to keep abreast of their school’s and district’s performance on Wisconsin Department of Public Instruction issued school and district report cards, as well. Parents of Jefferson students can rest easy about their schools’ performance, however, as the district continues to score in the “exceeds expectations” category on numerous measures. Introducing the topic at Monday’s school board meeting, Barb Johnson, director of curriculum and instruction for the Jefferson schools, started out by reminding attendees of the district’s aim of “Empowering Futures Together (so that) all students positively impact society.” The School District of Jefferson has laid out as the first core strategy in its comprehensive plan to inspire teaching, learning and achievement. Under that category, school officials have pledged to improve student growth, close achievement gaps and place at or above the state mean...

Gatsby glamour… with a twist. Photographer Natalie Orton reveals how she transformed a traditional 1930s house  Sumptuous jewel colours, clashing geometric patterns and curved shapes bring the iconic look of the 1920s and 30s into the 21st century, at the home of Natalie Orton. Despite its fresh modern twist, it is still the type of home you could imagine Jay Gatsby walking through, champagne in hand. Natalie, a photographer and property manager, bought her Poole home 14 years ago while working in London, and immediately set to work opening up some of the smaller rooms. ‘In traditional 1930s properties the rooms are a bit on the poky side, and that’s something we had to tackle carefully,’ says Natalie. This sideboard had already been upcycled using Cole & Son’s Prism wallpaper. ‘I had seen it but felt it would be too much for my walls. When I found it on an upcycled vintage G Plan sideboard I was over the moon,’ says Natalie. She then asked Zoe from @mucknbrass to paint the rest aqua in keeping with the colour scheme. For a similar rug see trouva.com As the house is listed, she and her husband Mark were restricted to what they could change structurally. ‘We were allow...

Champions League | Liverpool and Chelsea left requiring final-day points

Liverpool’s 1-1 draw with Napoli at Anfield means they will still need to earn at least a draw in their final Champions League group games. Their penultimate group tie on Wednesday night came against a Napoli side that head beaten the Reds on Match-Day 1. And it was Carlo Ancelotti’s side that drew first blood as Dries Mertens gave Napoli the lead after 21 minutes. The Belgian forward latched onto a through-ball before firing an excellent shot beyond Liverpool’s goalkeeper from the tightest of angles into the far corner. However, that point isn’t enough for Jurgen Klopp’s side to qualify for the knockout stages with a game to spare. They are still top of the group on 10 points, one clear of Napoli. A draw for Liverpool will be enough to progress when they face Red Bull on Match-Day 6. Given that Red Bull scored three away goals in losing 4-3 at Anfield earlier in the group, a 1-0 win – or better – for them would pip Klopp’s team on away goals. And if Napoli were to see off Genk at the same time in two weeks, Liverpool would slip to third. However, the Premier League side would be favourites to get at least a draw. Chelsea were inv...

Good neighbors make good fences and good fences require good planning, materials and construction. The Fence Bible (Storey

Good neighbors make good fences and good fences require good planning, materials and construction. The Fence Bible (Storey Publishing, 2005) acts as a reference to construct any fence that might be right for your property, with an explanation of project options and detailed step-by-step instructions from fence-building and home-improvement expert Jeff Beneke. The following, describing the basics of mesh fencing installation, is excerpted from chapter five, “Metal Fences.” In terms of sheer numbers of products — not to mention speed of installation and low cost — nothing beats metal mesh fencing. This is mass-produced fencing boiled down to its most elementary, functional essence. Determine exactly what you want the mesh fencing to keep in or out, then choose the appropriate product. While the on-hand selection may be small at any given store, rest assured that the manufacturer of that limited offering makes many variations on the theme. You should be able to special-order exactly what you need, or you may want to visit a more specialized retailer, such as a garden, landscaping, or agricultural supplier. Wire mesh has yet to attain any type of architectural chic that I am aware o...
