Xiaomi announces another 64-megapixel phone because those are a thing now

Xiaomi has announced the latest entry in its phenomenally popular Redmi Note series and, just as the Redmi Note 7 heralded a flood of 48-megapixel phone cameras earlier this year, the Redmi Note 8 Pro is among the first with a 64-megapixel sensor. Realme semi-revealed its XT with the same sensor a couple of days ago, but Xiaomi has now made a full announcement, so feel free to debate among yourselves as to who was truly first. Why would you want a 64-megapixel camera? Well, as with 48-megapixel phones, it’s generally not so you can shoot at full resolution. Both sensor designs use 0.8μm pixels that are grouped together in fours for better light sensitivity that’s supposedly equivalent to 1.6μm pixels. Using that technique, a 48-megapixel camera will produce 12-megapixel images, while Samsung’s GW1 64-megapixel sensor will get you 16 megapixels of usable resolution. It’s also physically larger, so it’ll capture more light overall. In some situations, like extremely bright lighting, you might want to shoot in 1:1 64-megapixel mode, but the 16-megapixel mode will be more broadly useful. Realme has provided sample 64-megapixel images that do indeed resolve a lot of detail in certain...

Squish, the two-legged cat, glides around the tile floor of Eastside Animal Clinic like a furry Zamboni

Squish, the two-legged cat, glides around the tile floor of Eastside Animal Clinic like a furry Zamboni machine, maneuvering among staff and incoming patients. This conversation is moderated according to USA TODAY’s community rules. Please read the rules before joining the discussion. Squish was brought to East Side Animal Clinic in May of 2007 as an emergency patient after being injured in a dog fight, and has since become the clinic’s two-legged greeter and mascot. Alex Driehaus, Naples Daily News A lesser cat than Squish would be six feet underground. But 12 years after she was attacked and shaken unconscious by a trio of dogs, the short-haired calico is Puss-on-Patrol at Eastside Animal Clinic in East Naples.  Squish glides over the clinic’s tile floor like a furry Zamboni machine, rounding corners and maneuvering among the staff and incoming patients.  “She can even climb stairs,” said Stacey Cox, practice manager for the clinic. “She is super-strong in her shoulders. We used to joke that she was getting steroids somewhere.”  Stacey Cox, practice manager and certified veterinary technician, encourages Squish to walk down her slide t...

Switches seem to be the simplest of electrical components – just two pieces of metal that

Switches seem to be the simplest of electrical components – just two pieces of metal that can be positioned to either touch each other or not. As such it would seem that it shouldn’t matter whether a switch is used for AC or DC. While that’s an easy and understandable assumption, it can also be a dangerous one, as this demo of AC and DC switching dramatically reveals. Using a very simple test setup, consisting of an electric heater for a load, a variac to control the voltage, and a homemade switch, [John Ward] walks us through the details of what happens when those contacts get together. With low-voltage AC, the switch contacts exhibit very little arcing, and even with the voltage cranked up all the way, little more than a brief spark can be seen on either make or break. Then [John] built a simple DC supply with a big rectifier and a couple of capacitors to smooth things out and went through the same tests. Even at a low DC voltage, the arc across the switch contacts was dramatic, particularly upon break. With the voltage cranked up to the full 240-volts of the UK mains, [John]’s switch was essentially a miniature arc welder, with predictable results as the plastic holding the c...

In fact, the company made news last August when its key mirrorless lineup models become the top-selling full-frame cameras in the United States. The company still trails Canon and Nikon in outright camera sales worldwide — and by a significant margin, with Sony occupying just 13-percent of sales against Nikon’s 25-percent and Canon’s 49-percent — but the writing is on the wall. Mirrorless is the future, and Sony has a significant jump on that technology. But what’s all that stuff even mean? Mirrorless? Full-frame? Briefly: Consumer and professional cameras are broadly lumped into two categories: full-frame and crop-framed, which refers to the size and quality of their sensors. Pros tend to go big, while consumer...

Uber and Lyft drivers are not letting up on the fight for AB-5 and a union

A number of Uber and Lyft drivers are protesting outside Uber’s San Francisco headquarters today to demand the passage of Assembly Bill 5 and the right to unionize. “What do we want? AB-5! When do we want it? Now!” That was one of the phrases drivers chanted outside Uber’s HQ this afternoon. This was part of a three-day caravan across California organized by Gig Workers Rising and Mobile Workers Alliance. As part of the protest, hundreds of drivers circled the blocks around Uber’s HQ honking their horns and sporting signs that say “AB5 + a union.” Adan, an Uber and Lyft driver, took the microphone to remind the companies and the California state legislature that people matter, they are not machines and should not be “chained to an app,” he said at the protest. “People deserve to be treated with dignity by their employer,” Adan said. “People deserve fair pay for the time and effort they put into their work. People deserve from their employer basic protections such as retirement and healthcare.” Presidential candidate Pete Buttigieg joined the protest, saying drivers deserve protections, such as overtime and a union. “They say that these technology companies are the future of the ...

Pantries are culinary closets, full of things that were fresh and cool when you got them—things

Pantries are culinary closets, full of things that were fresh and cool when you got them—things that you were sure would be fresh and cool forever. But guess what? Precious few things ever hold up for more than a couple of seasons. Just like shoulder pads, powder blue leisure suits, and low rise jeans, pantry staples—even the ones that seem like they should last forever—do go bad. That’s why we’ve rounded up a list of the nine pantry staples that you should be replacing a lot more often than you already do. Let’s take a look. Sure, all-purpose flour is shelf stable (meaning that it doesn’t require refrigeration). But you should really be replacing all-purpose flour every six to eight months—it’ll go stale after a while, and the flavor will start to deteriorate, which isn’t going to do your pancake game any favors. Instead of buying in bulk, pick up only as much as you’ll use in a month or two. (Which is to say, if you only bake cookies in December, consider snagging a fresh bag for the occasion.) Whole grain flour is a different story altogether. To make all-purpose and other white flours, the more volatile parts of the grain are sifted out. W...

A steady light rain this morning. Showers with perhaps a rumble of thunder developing for the afternoon. High 67F. Winds S at 5 to 10 mph. Chance of rain 70%.. Cloudy skies early, then partly cloudy after midnight. A stray shower or thunderstorm is possible. Low 54F. Winds light and variable. My parents were avid antique bottle collectors during the 1970s and that might have had some influence, but I remember the very first steamer trunk I got from Judy Hazlett, a neighbor who ran a short-lived antique shop out of her barn. She’d given it to me because it was just too big, and she didn’t think she had buyers that would be interested in it. It was probably four feet tall when stood on its end, and when opened, revealed a set of fabric-covered drawers on one side and a hanging rod with wooden clothes hangers on the other. I was fascinated by it. I wheeled it across the street to my house in a wheelbarrow. Called steamer trunks because they were used for world travel aboard steam ships, an entire season’s wardrobe could be stowed away while on some far-flung, exotic trip. I realize now that while I appreciated its vintage nature, I was also developing a love for things from other ...
